A clean, sturdy, and expandable Modular Desk Shelf system. Designed to be both functional and aesthetic, this system uses 22-23mm wooden dowels as rails, allowing you to build a shelf at the exact length you need for your setup.

Features:

  • Fully Modular: Use the Side Legs for a standard shelf, or use the intermediate support to extend the shelf using multiple dowel segments or to prevent sagging on long spans.

  • Modern Design: I chose the design of the legs for its modern looks and to minimize filament usage without sacrificing its strength.

  • Laptop Mount: Includes a secure addon that locks onto the rails using a 3D-printed bolt and a curvature-matched clamp. This is a two-part system. You must print one "mount_1" and one "mount_2" for it to work. * Do not print two of the same version.

    • Fit: Holds laptops up to 19mm thick.

    • Adjustable Position (Front/Rear): By swapping the sides, you control the depth:

      • Rear Position: laptop_mount_1( Right) + laptop_mount_2(Left) = Laptop sits over the back dowels.

      • Front Position: laptop_mount_1 (Left) + laptop_mount_2(Right) = Laptop sits over the front dowels.

    • Multiple Height Options: Available in 0mm, 5mm, 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm elevations. (Note: Ensure you print the same height for both parts (e.g., two 10mm files) so your laptop stays level!)

    • Note: The version in the photos uses 0mm elevation; the updated files are modified for a more universal fit across different laptop brands.

Critical Fitment Warning:

Wood manufacturing tolerances vary significantly.

  • My Experience: The dowels I used were sold as 23mm but actually measured 22.1mm at the thickest point. I recommend printing the tolerance test first to check fitment.

  • The Files: The holes in these models are 22.3mm for a tight fit.

  • Tip: If your dowels are a true 23mm, you can scale the Legs up by approx. 4% in your slicer to fit. However, I do not recommend scaling the addons. The addons use a screw-and-clamp mechanism, scaling the part will change the thread tolerances and the bolt size. It is best to use these files with 22mm–22.3mm dowels as designed to ensure the locking mechanism works perfectly.

Assembly:

  • Side Legs: The dowel sockets are 15mm deep.

  • Intermediate Leg: This part is 20mm thick and acts as a pass-through.

    • You can slide a continuous dowel through it, only do this if the dowel fit is not too tight.

    • Alternatively, you can cut dowels into smaller pieces and join them in the middle of this leg.

  • Security: If the fit is slightly loose, a small piece of double-sided tape inside the leg sockets will keep everything locked perfectly in place.

  • Stability: For extra stability, I also recommend applying a small piece of double-sided tape (or non-slip rubber pads) to the bottom of the legs. This prevents the shelf from sliding around on your desk.

Credits & Inspiration:

This project was inspired by the Workspace Hero Desk Shelf. I loved the concept, so I created this version to fit 23mm dowels (that turned out to be 22.1mm) and added my own aesthetic to the legs - designed for a clean look using minimal material.

Print Setting I Used:

I used PLA from Sunlu for my prints and they are strong enough.

Legs (Side & Intermediate):
  • Walls: 2 perimeters (tested and stable).

  • Infill: 15% Gyroid.

  • Variable Layer Height: Highly recommended for the top and bottom rounded edges to ensure a smooth finish.

  • Supports: None for side legs.

    • Tree Supports for intermediate leg with hooks.

  • Orientation:

    • Side Legs: Print with the dowel holes facing upwards.

    • Intermediate Leg: Hook facing upwards.

Laptop Mount:
  • Walls: 3 perimeters (extra strength for the clamping force).

  • Infill: 15% Gyroid.

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm for the first layer, then 0.15mm for the rest (critical for threads).

  • Orientation: X-pattern side facing the bed.

  • Supports: None needed.

Addons Lower Part (Clamp):
  • Walls: 2 perimeters.

  • Infill: 15% Grid.

  • Orientation: Smaller hole pointing to the bed.

  • Layer Height: 0.1mm to 0.15mm (recommended to print with bolts).

  • Supports: None needed.

Bolt:
  • Walls: 2 perimeters.

  • Infill: 15% Grid.

  • Orientation: Handle/Head on the bed.

  • Layer Height: 0.1mm to 0.15mm recommended for thread accuracy.

  • Supports: None needed.

I am currently working on a Garmin charger addon! If you have any other ideas for addons, please let me know in the comments!

A Note from the Designer

I am still a beginner in the world of 3D design and I’m doing my best to create functional, aesthetic parts for my setup. This project was a big learning experience for me!

Constructive criticism is highly valued. If you have suggestions on how to improve the tolerances, the geometry, or the printability of these parts, please let me know in the comments. I’m always looking to learn and improve my designs.
