Elegant knife block, perfect for proudly displaying your fancy knife collection. This hexagonal storage system rotates so all knives are easily within reach and uses magnets for a secure hold.

There are spaces for up to 6 magnets per face, the ones I used are very strong so you may want to print a spacer or use 1/8" thick magnets to lessen the attachment force and make knives easier to pull off. The knives in the pictures were held on very securely with only one magnet each. If you'd like to hold several smaller knives I'd recommend multiple magnets per face.

I'd recommend using something to add some grip on the bottom of the spinning base to protect your countertop and help the bearing spin. You may also want to seal the edges of each face, top, and bottom and fill the interior cavity with sand to increase the heft and make it easier to pull knives off one handed.

The quantity of each part needed for printing is in the notes of each STL. Strength of the model doesn't seem too important, I printed with 3 walls and 10% honeycomb infill.

Parts are tight press fits, you may need to adjust the tolerances, lightly sand, or use some percussive persuasion to make everything go together.

I used a sealed bearing, if I ever remix this I would probably use a tapered roller bearing instead. If you have a better bearing solution please let me know. The spacer goes on the spinning base to keep the bearing from making excessive contact but it's probably optional.

This print takes about a full roll of filament and has some big pieces so make sure you can print all the individual parts on your printer before you start.

I plan on making this out of wood eventually so I am using this as a prototype to iron out some kinks, let me know if you have any ideas for modifications. You could probably use this as-is if you sealed the faces somehow.

The materials make this a somewhat expensive project, if you use 18 magnets you're probably going to spend ~$50-60 on hardware and filament. Happy printing!

3D printing and food is not a good mix, think about sealing the faces with some food safe epoxy to avoid exposing your food to plastic particles.
