The only simple machine tool you’ll ever need, from the ingenious mind of Randall Munroe.¹ My local hardware store was out of stock of the tool, so I created my own. I made small adjustments to make it more practical to print, but this does not affect the usability of the tool in any way.
Printing & Assembly
Print the nut assembly, the pulley wheel, and the hook in black and the wedge shaft, screw assembly, and axle endcap in a contrasting color. (See below for color choices.) In addition to all the 3d printed parts, you will need a 30mm long cable or string. If you don't have a cable, you can braid one out of dental floss.²
All model files are oriented as you should print them. The nut assembly will need supports. None of the other parts should. Do not use supports inside the threads.
Carbon fiber nylon (PA-CF) will provide maximum strength although PLA is probably strong enough for typical use.
Assemble the main shaft by inserting the screw assembly in the end of the wedge shaft. Secure it with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue on the end of the screw assembly.
Place the pulley wheel on the pulley axle on the side of the wedge shaft and then place the axle endcap on the end of the axle. Secure it with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue in the center of the endcap.
Screw the nut assembly onto the screw end of the main shaft.
Attach one end of the cable to the nut assembly ring and feed it around the pulley. An omniknot is a good choice
Attach the other end of the cable to the hook.
Put your new tool to work.
The standard version of this tool has left-handed threading. If you want the version with right-handed threading, simply mirror the screw assembly and nut assembly before printing.
UPDATE: On reddit, u/Apprehensive_Hat8986, u/EverybodyMakes, and u/asphid_jackal pointed out that when used as a winch, the cable will wrap around the shaft. Accordingly, I've uploaded the nut and sleeve separately. If you plan to use this tool as a winch, print the nut and sleeve instead of the nut assembly.
Color compatibility
This tool is compatible with both metric and SAE tools. To maximize interoperability with other tools from specific manufacturers be sure to print the main shaft in the appropriate color as listed in the xkcd Color Survey Results:³
DeWalt = orangey yellow; “DeWalt makes a great lever and inclined plane”
Milwaukee = cherry red; “I hear Milwaukee’s wheel-and-axles are really good”
Kobalt = sapphire
Makita = teal blue
Ridgid = bright orange
Ryobi = green yellow
You may not be able to find filaments in those exact colors, so use the closest you can find.
