Overview

This is a modular socket organizing rail designed entirely in FreeCAD. It features interchangeable, sliding clips for 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive sockets, allowing you to customize your rail layout exactly how you need it.

The clips are engineered with a slide-and-lock friction fit. They slide smoothly along the rail but maintain enough friction to stay firmly in place when holding sockets. For easy configuration, the clips can be easily slipped on or removed by angling them slightly at either end of the rail.

System Compatibility

  • Pegboard: Includes integrated vertical mounting holes at each end, allowing you to mount the rail directly to standard workshop pegboards.

  • Gridfinity: The rail is sized to exactly 6 Gridfinity units long, for easy sizing. I may release a specialized version of the rail if there is interest.

I have uploaded the original FreeCAD source file (.FCStd) alongside the STLs to support open customization. Feel free to modify the tolerances or design your own custom clip attachments!

Print Settings

This model was successfully printed and tested using Qidi PLA Rapido. Because it relies on a friction fit and needs to withstand sockets being repeatedly pulled off, the following settings are recommended for strength:

  • Material: PLA, PLA Rapido, or PETG

  • Perimeters (Walls): 3 to 4 walls (crucial for keeping the clips rigid)

  • Infill: 20% to 30% (Rectilinear or Gyroid)

  • Supports: No supports required. Design prints clean natively.

  • Orientation: Print the rail flat on its back. Print the clips vertically on their flat sides.

Assembly & Use

  1. Slide the desired mix of 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" clips onto the rail from either end. To bypass the end stops, angle the clip slightly as you slide it on/off.Place the rail into a 6-unit Gridfinity bin/drawer, or use the end holes to secure it to your pegboard.
