This is a phone holder that I made. This is the first "successful" project I've done without following a tutorial.

This is a phone holder I made in FreeCAD. It is the first, technically, "successful" project I've done that I did on my own. Other than checking the beginner video that shows me on how stuff works in FreeCAD, there was no tutorial I followed for modeling a specific design.

I know the phone holder is not good. In fact, this is a recovered file I thought I lost from the program crashing via user error. I thought to upload it, partly to document and get feedback from anyone who knows FreeCAD.

My next model is going to be a phone holder... but with a more intentional design I sketched prior to winging it.

Issues I Need To Work On

  • Problem: I need to make better measurements.

    • Solution 1: Calipers, yes. But also making sense of the measurements and learning to apply said measurements properly.

    • Solution 2: Need more clearance for phone hook/slot.

    • Solution 3: Understand printer's dimensional accuracy.

  • Problem: Improve my sense of scale while working in the digital environment. It can be hard to understand when it is impossible for me to visualize.

    • Solution 1: Photos for reference and with drawings to understand measurements I've taken.

    • Solution 2: Digital mockups of the real thing can help get an idea of proportion and scale.

  • Problem: Starting without any reference causes me to blank out and have issue with designing the model.

    • Solution: Use reference images. However, working with my own sketches is better because I can draft a design with all the elements I want and to visualize what I'm thinking of.

Print Settings & Info

I provided the .3mf file. It might show what the settings are, but I'm not sure:

  • Slicer: Orca 2.4.0

  • Printer: Qidi Tech Q1 Pro

  • Filament: Matter Hackers Tan Build PLA (normally I use white)

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm

  • Infill: 10%

  • Walls: 3

  • Support: Yes - Tree (Auto) - 30 Threshold Angle - On Build Plate Only

I didn't really try with making the print settings good. I just wanted to see my digital model printed out to get a sense of what I made in my own hands. As expected, not really good. But I did learn how difficult it is to make an accurate slot/hook gap for where the phone is intended to be held.

Next phone holder project notes:

  1. Make two versions.

    1. A hooked one for better security.

    2. Flat holder for better view.

  2. Do not make it so massive. Needs to be in good proportion for the phones I intend to use it on.

  3. Needs to be stronger in design. Rather than the big, flat base in this one.

  4. Needs to be NO SUPPORT structure design.
