This insect cage access port was designed to enhance the functionality of portable insect cages by converting them into temporary insectary-style containment units. The access port incorporates a secure mounting system for an arm sleeve, allowing users to safely access the interior of the cage for routine maintenance, specimen handling, feeding, or equipment replacement without opening the primary enclosure. The arm sleeve used is a 2 gallon paint strainer bag.

Assembly notes:

  1. Install the Inner Ring: Position the inner ring (the ring containing the retention barbs) on the interior side of the cage's primary access door. Press the retention barbs through the cage mesh. In some cases, a very small slit may need to be made in the mesh to allow the barbs to pass through. Care should be taken to keep the slit as small as possible, as an oversized opening will reduce the mesh's ability to be securely retained between the rings.

  2. Install the Arm Sleeve: Place the closed end of the 2-gallon paint strainer bag over the exposed barbs of the inner ring. Press the sleeve material onto the barbs in the same manner used for the cage mesh, ensuring that the sleeve is evenly distributed around the ring without excessive folds or tension.

  3. Secure the Mesh and Sleeve: Apply a thin, even layer of thin- or medium-viscosity CA glue between the mesh and the inner ring. The adhesive helps prevent the mesh from slipping out of the assembly during use. Only a minimal amount of adhesive should be used, as excessive glue buildup may prevent the outer retaining ring from fully seating onto the barbs.

  4. Install the Outer Retaining Ring: Align the outer retaining ring with the exposed barbs and press it firmly into place until it snaps over the retention barbs. Depending on print tolerances and material thickness, a pair of pliers may be required to fully seat the retaining ring and ensure all barbs are completely engaged.

  5. Remove the Internal Mesh: After both rings have been fully assembled and secured, cut away the mesh located inside the access port opening. This step should only be performed after the assembly is complete. Cutting the mesh prior to ring installation can weaken the connection between the mesh and the access port, resulting in reduced retention strength and an increased risk of failure during use.
