I really like this design because it has a genuine engineering idea behind it: instead of making dedicated moon clip holders for every caliber and angle, you separate the structural body from interchangeable caliber-specific sleeves. That’s worth emphasizing because it explains why there are so many STLs.
OVERVIEW
MoonClipDock is a modular moon clip holster system for .357/.38 Special and .45 ACP moon clips. Rather than creating a dedicated holster for every caliber and mounting configuration, the design uses interchangeable caliber-specific sleeves that install into common holster bodies. The speed plate allows you to turn this into a whole speed belt like in USPSA / ICORE. You can build it in a variety of configurations.
The system supports single and double moon clip carriers, vertical and 45° mounting options, and standard Tek-Lok compatible mounting patterns. All structural components are assembled using common metric hardware and heat-set inserts.

|---|---|---|
.357 Magnum Moon Clips | Tested | Compatible with caliber-specific sleeves |
.38 Special Moon Clips | Tested | Uses .357 sleeve geometry |
.45 ACP Moon Clips | Tested | Compatible with caliber-specific sleeves |
Single Moon Clip Carrier | Supported | One moon clip |
Double Moon Clip Carrier | Supported | Two moon clips |
Vertical Configuration | Supported | Standard body |
45° Configuration | Supported | Dedicated mounting bodies |
Tek-Lok Compatible Mounts | Supported | Standard mounting pattern |

DESIGN GOALS
Goal | Engineering Rationale |
|---|---|
Modular caliber support | Different calibers use interchangeable sleeves rather than dedicated holster bodies. |
Shared components | Bodies, backplates, and hardware are reused across multiple configurations. |
Simplified maintenance | Sleeves can be replaced independently if worn or if changing calibers. |
Flexible mounting | Supports both vertical and 45° carrier orientations. |
Standard hardware | Uses common M3 and M4 fasteners throughout the design. |
Using interchangeable sleeves significantly reduces the number of unique structural components while allowing the same carrier body to support multiple moon clip diameters.

BILL OF MATERIALS (BOM)
Qty | Item | Specification | Optional | Recommended Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
As Required | M4 Heat-Set Inserts | Brass | No | Ruthex, CNC Kitchen, McMaster-Carr |
As Required | M4 Countersunk Screws | 6–8 mm | No | McMaster-Carr, Misumi, Amazon |
As Required | M3 Screws | 45–50 mm | No | McMaster-Carr, Misumi, Amazon |
As Required | M3 Nuts | Standard | No | McMaster-Carr or equivalent |
As Required | M4 Nuts | Standard | No | McMaster-Carr or equivalent |
As Required | Neodymium Magnets | 12 mm, 15 mm, or 16 mm | No | DIYMAG or equivalent manufacturer |
Magnet diameter depends on the selected sleeve variant. The magnet mounts above the sleeve and captures the steel body of the moon clip.

PART TYPES / COMPONENTS
Part | Function |
|---|---|
Single Body | Holds one moon clip assembly |
Double Body | Holds two moon clip assemblies |
Single Backplate | Retains the body assembly |
Double Backplate | Retains the double carrier assembly |
Inner Sleeve | Centers the moon clip within the outer sleeve |
Outer Sleeve | Houses the inner sleeve and magnet assembly |
Top Hat | Captive spacer that completes the sleeve assembly |
45° Bodies | Positions the carrier at approximately 45° for competition use |
⸻
FILES INCLUDED
File Group | Purpose |
|---|---|
Single Body / Backplate | Standard single moon clip carrier |
Double Body / Backplate | Dual moon clip carrier |
45° Tall Body | Angled carrier with increased stand-off |
45° Small Body | Compact angled carrier |
.357 Inner / Outer Sleeves | Sleeve set for .357 Magnum and .38 Special moon clips |
.45 ACP Inner / Outer Sleeves | Sleeve set for .45 ACP moon clips |
45° Sleeve Variants | Caliber-specific sleeves for the angled carriers |
Top Hat | Completes and retains the sleeve assembly |
⸻
ASSEMBLY
Install the M4 heat-set inserts into the carrier body.
Assemble the inner sleeve, outer sleeve, magnet, and top hat using the M3 screw and nut.
Install the completed sleeve assembly into the carrier body.
Attach the backplate using M4 countersunk screws.
Mount the completed carrier to your preferred Tek-Lok compatible attachment.
The 45° variants use a shorter body, which means shorter M3 screws may be required depending on the sleeve configuration. These versions are also somewhat more difficult to assemble because of the reduced working clearance.

TESTING / VALIDATION
The system has been validated with both .357/.38 Special and .45 ACP moon clip configurations using the corresponding interchangeable sleeve assemblies.
Both single and double carrier bodies, along with the vertical and 45° mounting variants, use the same modular assembly approach. Caliber changes require only replacement of the sleeve components rather than the complete carrier.
Magnetic retention is provided by neodymium magnets mounted above the sleeve assembly, allowing the magnet to engage the steel body of the moon clip while keeping the clip centered within the carrier.
For the speed plate - You can make this out of TPU but I made it out of TPU-GF because I had it on hand. Either will work.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
Future revisions will expand compatibility to additional moon clip diameters while preserving the existing body and mounting system. The modular sleeve architecture is intended to minimize duplicate parts as new calibers and carrier configurations are added.
