I was looking for a good excuse to use the ASA I have sitting around so I modeled and printed some MLOK Rail Covers. I aimed for something that would be slightly grippy, but not a PITA to use or clean.
These parts are printed with variable layer height. For the utmost quality, variable layer height can be removed and they can be printed in full .08 or .16mm layer height. I aimed for fully functional with less emphasis on form, but your preferences may differ.
Four options:
Metric Made for 5mm flat head screws.
SAE: Made for #10 flat head screws.
With Alignment: requires support material as the rear of the panels has slight protrusions to line up on the MLOK slot. Removing supports isn't terrible, but a pocket knife will help get the stuff around the protrusions.
Flat: No support is required as the back is flat.
These are designed, and intended to be printed from ASA plastic. The model is scaled in the slicer to 100.7% on both X and Y to account for material shrinkage. I used Inland ASA for my prints. I lightly sanded the “pointy” side with 1000 grit sandpaper to take away any sharp points/burrs from printing.
Recommend printing with low layer heights (.08 on my P2S) for better quality!
For screws/T-nuts, I purchased a pack of 16 M5 screws and nuts on Amazon. The screws I got are a little long at 11mm, so I may end up shortening the screws. I believe around 8mm is plenty. I have a Geissele handguard, YMMV for other manufacturers.
