"The Cat" Ligature

Leopard, Lion, and Tiger Variations

USAGE

"The Cat" gets its name from the design resemblance to a cat's face ("ears" on top and "eyes" on the bottom). Mounting orientation is two "ears" on the top left, one on the top right (assuming you are staring at the tip-opening of the mouthpiece). The "ears" on top are squeezed to open the ligature and allow it to slide on to the mouthpiece. Release the ears and the ligature stays in place.  Place your pointer and middle fingers on the left ears and your thumb on the right ear.  You may wish to lightly sand the ligature to remove rough spots and prevent scratching your mouthpiece.

There are 3 versions of "The Cat" ligature to suit different players' needs and mouthpiece/reed combinations: Leopard, Lion, and Tiger.  The "ears" are shaped differently on all three to help visually identify each when mounted on the instrument.

Leopard: 4 bumps to support reed with minimal contact area.

Lion: 2 long rails lengthwise relative to the mouthpiece to support the reed.

Tiger: 2 horizontal rails to support the reed.

PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS

-PLA+ filament recommended, PETG should also work.  Nylon will provide maximum lifespan.

-Use a standard .2mm layer height.

-Print in the default orientation.

-15% infill or greater.

-SUPPORTS MUST BE ENABLED FOR THE LIGATURE.

-3 walls (perimeters) for stiffness. Changing the number of walls will alter the spring tension of the ligature. More walls = stiffer ligature.

-You may wish to lightly sand the ligature to remove rough spots and prevent scratching your mouthpiece.

KNOWN ISSUES

Your choice of material will effect The Cat's spring tension along with the useable lifespan.  Plastics gradually lose their spring tension over time and The Cat will eventually wear-out. You will need to print a new one. PLA+ offers a good balance of printing ease, grip strength, and durability. PLA is stiffer and provides an overly strong grip and less durability. Plastics like nylon, PETG, and PCTG will hold their grip much longer but their grip is lighter than PLA+. In other words: you can customize the feel and color of your ligature by your choice of material.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS

-Refine the mouthpiece cap. [Current cap works... sort of.]

-Create versions for auxilliary clarinets and saxophone family.

-Address clarinet community issues.
