This fully parametric sofa armrest tray is inspired by an award winning design from  R&DStudio. I built this smaller version from the ground up in Fusion 360 to provide a hobbyist-friendly model that fits comfortably on the build plates of the Prusa MK3/MK4 family (or similarly sized FDM printers).

As shown in the reference photo, the tray is spacious enough to accommodate two coffee mugs and features a convenient side caddy for your remotes.

Customization & Printing Advice

  • Default Sizing: The current STL files are sized perfectly for an IKEA Vimle sofa.

  • Fully Parametric: The included Fusion 360 files can be freely modified to fit the exact width of any sofa armrest.

  • Material Choice: I highly recommend printing this in PETG. PLA can soften and fail when exposed to a warm mug of coffee, but PETG will hold up to the heat.

  • Test your Tolerances: If you resize the design for another sofa, I strongly suggest printing just the first centimeter (Z-height) of one leg in draft mode. Test this small piece for snugness before printing the final models! Keeping the fit tight ensures the legs grab onto the armrest securely, preventing accidental arm strikes from knocking your drinks over.

Assembly Instructions In this version, the tray parts are assembled using adhesives (similar to the original design).

  • Glue: I recommend using a fast-setting, two-part epoxy for maximum strength.

  • Alignment Nubs: The tolerances on all the nubs are currently a bit generous. They serve to align the parts rather than providing a friction fit, so glue is required.

  • Flexibility: The remote holder should be glued to the front leg, and the back leg is set by itself. I intentionally did not glue the top tray down; it simply rests on top of the legs to allow for easy flexing and movement.

Remix Opportunities! If you plan to resize the parameters or edit the design in Fusion, there is room for improvement! If you make any of the following changes, please publish your remix—I would be happy to update my description and credit you:

  • Joinery: Upgrade the glued-on elements to a snap-fit or screw-clamped design.

  • Tighter Nubs: Adjust the alignment nubs to be snug enough for a friction fit.

  • Caddy Redesign: Close off the front remote tray or add a tighter grille to reduce the risk of smaller remotes slipping through.

Credits A massive thanks to R&DStudio for the original award-winning design, and for kindly updating their published license to allow the community to create remixes.
