NUMBER-THEORY MINI ACOUSTIC DIFFUSER
A set of eight unique 100 mm acoustic diffuser tiles designed for studios, streaming rooms, music spaces and other rooms with harsh high-frequency reflections.. ach tile uses a different stepped pattern taken from a larger number-theory sequence. Print one of each tile and arrange them four across and two high to create an approximately 400 x 200 mm panel. The tiles can be reordered or rotated to create different layouts and avoid the repeated look found in many modular wall panels.
This Print has been made hollow on purpose to reduce the material usage, Happy to share the heavier files but they was consuming a lot of material.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
A hard, flat wall reflects sound back in one main direction.
These tiles use surfaces at different depths, so each reflected part of the sound travels a slightly different distance. This changes the timing and phase of the reflections, helping spread them in different directions instead of sending one strong reflection straight back into the room.
The patterns are inspired by established number-theory acoustic diffuser research, including Schroeder-style diffusion principles and the modular diffuser work described in BBC Research Department Report 1990/15. Each tile uses a different 6 x 6 section from a larger quantised pattern, giving all eight tiles a related but unique stepped arrangement.
HOLLOW, BUT NOT OPEN. The towers are hollow from the rear to reduce filament use, while the visible sides and top surfaces remain closed. This keeps the stepped reflective surface facing into the room while removing most of the unnecessary internal plastic. The full set of eight tiles uses approximately 401 g of PLA.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
The set contains eight unique tiles labelled A to H. Print one copy of each tile to create the complete panel.
PRINTING
Recommended starting settings:
- PLA
- 0.20 mm layer height
- 0% infill
- No supports
- Rear openings facing the build plate
- Normal PLA cooling
The short top bridges should print without generated supports when bridging is tuned correctly. Print one tile first and check the top surfaces before starting the full set.
ASSEMBLY
Arrange the eight tiles four across and two high. There is no fixed order. The tiles can be rotated or moved around to create different patterns. A gap of 1 to 3 mm between tiles is optional. Mount them with the stepped surfaces facing into the room and the hollow rear sections against the wall or a backing board.
Possible locations include, Behind the listening position, On bright or flutter-prone side walls, Behind a streaming or recording position, Behind vocals or instruments, Suitable studio ceiling areas. A starting distance of around 0.5 to 1 metre from ears or microphones gives the scattered reflections more space to blend.
Based on the tower depth and cell width, the estimated geometric range is approximately 5.4 kHz to 11.4 kHz. This means the tiles are mainly intended to interact with higher-frequency reflections such as vocal sibilance, cymbals, snare attack, instrument harmonics and bright flutter echoes. This is an estimate based on the geometry, not a laboratory measurement.
These tiles scatter reflected sound. They do not absorb sound or stop it passing through walls. They are not, Soundproofing, Acoustic foam, Bass traps, Low-frequency treatment, Guaranteed echo removal, Laboratory-certified acoustic products, they are best treated as a compact experimental diffuser system and a geometric studio wall feature.
