This dashboard drifter stand uses 5x2 magnets to allow for fast replacement of the model you put on.
Sports car, X-wing, a semi? You could switch them in an instant!
Hardware required:
608 Bearing (Skateboards, skates, etc)
5x2mm cylindrical magnet for the base.
One 5x2mm cylindrical magnet for each platform you want.
A little bit of glue (superglue is ok)
What to print:
PLA might (and probably will) get deformed from the sun on the dashboard. ABS, PETG, ASA, and other high-temp materials will be better suited.
Base:
Select one of the provided bases. Filenames indicate tilt angle. If your dashboard is level, you should go with 8° or 16°. If it is sloping down, you should go with 8° or 4°.
"Limiter" in the file name is the half-circular protrusion on top that prevents the model from spinning all the way.
I suggest printing with the top being level and with supports. Supports should be easy to remove and leave a textured bottom that helps with sticking to tape. (see pictures)
If you print with the bottom level, the top will have considerable stair-stepping, and the cavity for the bearing may lose size.
When printing a version without a limiter, you can print it upside down.
Insert:
This is the part you put from the bottom of the bearing. Print in file orientation.
Post:
Select the platform type that suits your use case. I recommend "post_diecast_cars.stl" for diecast cars. Print in file orientation.
For things that should "fly" or have parts sticking below the platform, you can print "tall" versions of the posts that are 1cm taller.
Assembly:
Glue magnets into "insert" and the "posts". Keep in mind the orientation of the magnets: "insert" and "post" should attract.
Glue the "insert" into the bearing. Keep the glue to a minimum so it will not spill into the bearing.
Push the bearing into the stand with the "insert" facing down. You may want to file the seam on the print, or print the base about 2% larger if you have a problem fitting it.
Attach your post to the ornament of your choosing. You can use glue, blutack, or magic.
Insert the "post" with the ornament into the hole in the base. Try to aim the triangular cutout at the triangle protrusion on the "insert".
The base can be attached to your dashboard using double-sided tape.
DIY (optional):
You can use files in the DIY folder to prepare your own dashboard drifters!
DIY_boolean_cutter.stl can be used to cut out the required shape from the base of your design.
DIY_limiter.stl can be added to the top of a base to limit ornament rotation.
DIY_post_minimal_height.stl is the minimal part that interfaces with the "insert" and is flush with the top of the base.
DIY_post_nolimiter and DIY_post_limiter are ready posts that you can add custom platforms to.
