Ever wondered how locks worked in the dark ages?

Step back in time with a fully functional 3D-printed replica of a 14th-century padlock. Inspired by authentic archaeological examples, this model offers a hands-on look at historic mechanical security.

Unlike modern tumbler locks or Victorian warded locks, this padlock uses a low-tech spring action that was easier for medieval blacksmiths to forge. The shank completely detaches from the body rather than swinging on a hinge, giving it a true period-accurate operation. It makes an excellent educational tool, a tactile prop for historical displays, or an interactive puzzle to lockpick for D&D campaigns, tabletop RPGs, and escape room scenarios. Lockpicking difficulty: Easy.

Key Features

  • Historic Accuracy: Based on authentic 14th-century iron barb lock designs.

  • Detachable Shank: The shackle separates entirely from the lock body when unlocked.

  • Tool-Free Assembly: All structural parts are designed to snap together securely without glue or extra hardware. (glue is optional if you want it permanently fit together.)

  • Hands-On Experience: Great for tabletop gamers, historians, and lockpicking enthusiasts looking for a unique interactive prop.

Printing & Settings

  • Supports: Minimal supports needed (only for the key). The rest of the model prints cleanly support-free.

  • Nozzle: 0.4mm

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm

  • Wall Lines / Perimeters: Increase perimeters to 4 or 5+ for both the Shank and the Key. Extra wall strength is recommended to ensure the mechanical stress of unlocking doesn't snap the parts.

  • Infill: 10% ro 15% of your favorite infill.
