Stepper motor take on the classic Moire disc illusion. Quiet microstepping drivers on a custom PCB. Fully printed discs.
Based on the feedback I got so far I will be making a version with a single motor which will not require a custom PCB. This version will be compatible with the same discs as this one. So if you're interested in building it, but don't want to mess around with sourcing the PCB and drivers, stay tuned.
BOM:
Part number | Part name | Qty | Note |
Custom PCB | 1 | ||
XIAO ESP32-C6 | Microcontroller | 1 | I also tested it with XIAO ESP32-C3 and it works well. I used the C6 because it has an integrated antenna. |
TMC 2226 | Stepper driver | 2 | TMC 2209 also work |
5V step down module | 1 | The step down module takes the input voltage and reduces it to 5V for the LEDs and the microcontroller. The module I used seems to be proprietary for this Czech e-shop. https://dratek.cz/arduino-platforma/1738-step-down-modul-napajeni-mini-buck-nastavitelny.html I thought it would be more widely available. Nevertheless, any DC/DC 5V buck converter should work as long as it's connected in the same way.
B5B-XH-A | 5-pin Motor connector | 2
7-pin headers | 2 | For mounting the XIAO
8-pin headers | 4 | For mounting the drivers
B3B-XH-A | 3-pin connector | 1 | For connecting the LED strip |
PJ-002A | DC power connector | 1
28BYJ-48 | Stepper motor | 2 | The steppers are modified for bipolar drivers! Check out this tool: https://www.printables.com/model/1814506-28byj-48-stepper-bipolar-mod-drill-jig-gridfinity |
WS2812B 60 LED/m | LED light strip | 25 cm | I used self adhesive strip. At 60 LED/m the 25 cm section has 14 LEDs. |
608 | Ball bearing 608 | 4 | Probably the most common bearings out there |
DIN 7982 3x12 | Short screw | 4 | This screw holds the motors in place. It's possible to use different length up to 16 mm. Also It work with standard DIN 912 bolts as well, the bolt will cut it's own thread |
DIN 7982 3x25 | Long screw | 3 | For attaching the bottom lid |
DIN 912 3x6 | Inbus bolt | 4 | For attaching the PCB |
DIN 912 4x50 | Inbus bolt | 1 | Goes through the shaft |
DIN 562 m4 | Square nut | 1 | Fixes the shaft with the 4x50 bolt |
⌀6x2mm N42 | Magnet | 16* | These are the same magnets people use in gridfinity boxes. *The mechanims uses 8 magnets and each disc also uses 8 magnets. |
All parts are designed for 3d printing without supports!
Parts to print:
Part number | Part name | Quantity | Note |
04P01 | frame | 1 | |
04P02 | cog10 | 2 | |
04P03 | cog20_outer | 1 | |
04P04 | cog20_inner | 1 | |
04P05 | shaft | 1 | |
04P06 | bottom_lid | 1 | |
04P07 | top_lid | 1 | |
04P08 | front_flange_higher | 1 | There is also a file called 04P08-front_flange it's the same thing but puts the discs closer together. I recommend the higher version as the discs can be sligthly bent and get into collide. |
04P09 | washer_shaft | 2 | |
04P10 | front_disc_hub | 1
04P11 | back_disc_hub | 1 | |
04P12 | disc-*-segment | 8 or 16 | Depending on the how the disc is split you print either 8 or 16 |
04P13 | disc-border_* | 16
04P14 | disc_retainer | 2 |
