Twist-off jars are used for jam, jelly, cucumbers and vegetables. After use, the glass containers are often thrown away, or perhaps recycled. This watering flower is a way to use the jars for giving water to bees. Water is very important for cooling the hive and keeping the bee colony healthy especially in a hot summer.
Determining the size of a jar using a ruler
If you have the lid of the jar, place it face down on the table. Use the ruler to measure the inner diameter of the lid at its widest point from rim to rim – taking care to avoid the raised ribs. The measured value ± 1 mm corresponds to the size of your lid: for example, if the diameter is 81 mm, it is a TO82 lid.
If you do not have a lid for your jar, the easiest way to determine the correct lid size is to measure the outer diameter at the rim of the jar. Place the ruler against the outer rim in the centre of the jar and measure the diameter at its widest point from outer rim to outer rim, excluding the thread. Add approximately 6 mm to the measured value to obtain the correct lid size for your jar: for example, if the outer diameter is approximately 76 mm, it is a TO82.
