Why I made this:
I have been on a big Gridfinity tear. It's kind of a pain to install magnets one at a time while ensuring that you have the right polarity.
This is a big-ass 6x6 jig that helps speed up the process.
Why this is cool:
This jig makes it WAY faster to populate a baseplate print with magnets that are in the right orientation.
If you're press fitting the magnets, this jig also provides support to prevent your baseplate from bending/cracking.
Printing notes:
I printed this in PLA with a bit beefier perimeter/infill settings to to make it stiff.
Putting it together:
It's tedious, but there's no way around it - you've got to install magnets in the correct polarity into the jig before your first use.
You'll need (144) 6x3 magnets to populate this jig.
Pretend this jig is a bin.
I personally do "north is up", so I installed magnets into this so that the south face is exposed.
It has (8) countersunk holes for #8 wood screws if you want to mount this to a workbench or a piece of wood.
How to use it:
If you're gluing magnets, you'll want to put a drop of glue in each baseplate magnet pocket before you chuck magnets at it.
Drop your freshly printed baseplate on top and then fling magnets at the pockets of your baseplate. They'll auto align.
I'm experimenting with a slip-fit magnet baseplate which would hopefully make the process super fast, albeit at the expense of glue cure time.
Hope you find this useful!
