Your old Framework Laptop 12 Mainboard, floating in mid-air. Nothing solid touches the board's frame from below: it is held up by five taut strings in a tensegrity structure. Designed and clash-checked against Framework's official mainboard STEP (CC BY 4.0).

How it floats

The board is screwed into an upper ring. A hook arm hangs down from that ring; a second arm rises from the base and reaches over it. A short central string joins the two arm tips and pulls the ring up, while four corner strings stop it from tipping. The strings are always in tension, so the whole thing is surprisingly stiff.

Why it works as a computer

  • Uses the board's own 4 captive M2 screws: they thread straight into bosses on the ring (1.7 mm self-tapping holes).

  • Best possible cooling: fan intake open on both sides, heatsink exhaust completely free.

  • All four USB-C ports, the power button and the charge LEDs stay fully exposed.

Parts

  • Base ring (43 min, 24 g)

  • Upper ring with board bosses (53 min, 26 g)

  • Rising arm (13 min) and hanging arm (12 min), already laid flat for printing

  • Assembly gauge (48 min): holds the ring at the exact height while you tie the strings. Print 2 if you like.

Footprint 245 × 151 mm, needs a 256 mm bed. No supports. PETG recommended for the arms.

Hardware

  • 4× M3 × 12 screws (arms to rings)

  • ~1 m braided fishing line 0.5–1 mm (or Dyneema)

Assembly

  1. Screw the arms to the base and to the upper ring (2× M3 each).

  2. Screw the mainboard onto the upper ring with its captive screws.

  3. Place the gauge blocks on the base and rest the upper ring on them.

  4. Tie the central string between the two arm tips (knot recesses hide the knots), pulling it tight.

  5. Tie the four corner strings, tensioning them evenly, then remove the gauges.

Images are renders. Clearances were verified in CAD against the official mainboard model; not yet test-printed with a physical board. Makes and feedback are very welcome.
