I just modeled another hex key organizer key fob and shortened the allen wrenches to go inside.
So I had the cut-offs lying around (I have shortened them about 30mm and I had those pieces left. So I made another one to recylce just these pieces.
The former model relies on the L-shape of the allen wrenches to grant them holding up under torque you apply. This one had to be different. It solely relies on the hex-shape of the cutoffs inside the plastic.
How you use this:
The STL file has separate geometries for the numbers inside. You can either use it as mono-bloc and print in one color or you can split it up in prusa slicer. If you have a multi-color printer, you can use a different color for the numbers or just delete the numbers and leave them as relief to have them appear in a single color print.
The geometry can be printed without support.
Printing:
I used PETG CF for the main body together with regular PETG for the numbers. Printed on a CORE ONE+ with MMU3. Used the balanced 0.2mm profile (but with 3 perimeters and 30% infill and only a single perimeter for top and bottom.
Assembly:
Prepare your hex key cutoffs: grind back the sharp edges of the cut and form some decent chamfers. You can also grind some slots into the sides of the hex key cutoffs, where they get embedded.
Prepare a small container with water for cooling.
Clamp your print in a vice, let the first hole face upwards and prepare the corresponding hex key (2.5mm, 3mm or 4mm).
Then prepare either a hotair-gun or a torch (be safe and take precautions to operate the torch!). I used a torch and heated the hex bits only on the side that gets embedded. As soon as the metal turns its color to a slight straw color, it is hot enough to be pressed into its predefined hole. Act quickly as the metal cools down pretty fast. Press the hex-key in down to the bottom of the hole and imediately cool it off in the water you prepared.
Repeat for all 3 hex key pieces.
Congrats, you made yourself a nice key fob, add a split ring and enjoy!
