A 3D-printable model of a calixarene macrocycle, a quintessential building block of supramolecular and host–guest chemistry celebrated for its characteristic vase- or bowl-like shape. This model was exported directly from the open-source web application 3D Printing Molecules, developed in collaboration between UCT Prague and the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University.
Chemical & Educational Highlights
Structure: A macrocyclic oligomer composed of phenolic units linked by methylene bridges (most commonly represented in the calixarene framework).
Conformation: The characteristic cone conformation creates a well-defined hydrophobic internal cavity resembling the ancient Greek calix crater vessel, from which it derives its name.
Host–Guest Chemistry: Serves as a classical synthetic host molecule capable of selectively encapsulating neutral small molecules, cations, and metal ions within its central cavity.
Applications: Widely utilized across supramolecular chemistry, sensor development, selective ion extraction, biomimetic catalysis, and molecular nanotechnology.
Model Generation & Features
Representation Style: Spheres
Direct Export: Prepared and optimized via 3dmolekuly.vscht.cz
Educational Utility: An ideal tactile resource for studying stereochemistry, macrocyclic topology, and molecular recognition where physical interaction instantly clarifies spatial cavity dimensions.
