A 3D-printable model of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), the fundamental energy currency of all living cells. This model was generated and exported directly from the open-source web application 3D Printing Molecules, developed through a collaboration between UCT Prague and the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University.
Biochemical & Educational Highlights
Structure: A nucleotide consisting of an adenine base, a ribose sugar, and a triphosphate chain (α, β, and γphosphate groups).
High-Energy Bonds: The core mechanism of biochemical energy transfer — hydrolysis of the terminal phosphoanhydride bond yielding ADP + Pi releases the free energy required for muscle contraction, active membrane transport, and biosynthesis.
Coenzyme & Signaling Precursor: Beyond cellular energy transport, ATP serves as an essential phosphate donor for kinases and as the substrate for adenylate cyclase to produce cyclic AMP (cAMP).
Spatial Arrangement: The physical model effectively illustrates the steric orientation of the negatively charged polyphosphate tail, which in vivo coordinates with divalent magnesium ions (Mg2+) to stabilize conformation.
Model Generation & Features
Representation Style: Spheres
Direct Export: Prepared and optimized via 3dmolekuly.vscht.cz
Educational Utility: An ideal tactile learning tool for biochemistry, molecular biology, and physiology classes across high schools and universities.
