Overview

Real racing requires squishy beans. This model reuses the hexagon silicone beans from one of my old builds; The CocoVision (from Bravest Coconut).

Printed Parts

The shifter uses 3 main parts; stem, beans, and top cap.

The Stem

The stem now has (since v1.1) an alternate version for adapter-less installation.

The stem is best printed thread-down - with or without fuzzy skin applied to the outside face.

The Beans (and mould)

You don’t have to use the silicone moulds; the toe beans can be printed in standard TPU or even hard plastic if you just want the visual aesthetic.

For the paw print mould I would suggest ASA/ABS for vapour smoothing but even PETG is fine at 0.08mm layer height.

As for the silicone - I used a standard pink two part mix kit from Amazon. Approximately 1/2 tbsp of each part to make 4 paw prints. Be sure to trim the excess before placing inside the top cap.

The Top Cap

The top cap is best printed bottom-down with supports (so the round surface is preserved). For my test prints I trialed PETG, which gave the best snap-fit closing, and TPU, which felt nicer as a grip but had a looser cap fit - a TPU stem with PETG cap worked ok.

Assembly

Assembly is simply placing the toe beans part inside the top cap and then pressing them down onto the stem. If need be the back of the steam has a slot to pry the bits apart again.

Update for v1.1 - If using the direct-screw stem then ensure the stem is attached to the TH8S rod before attaching the beans and cap.

Change log

  • v1.1 - Added a version that doesn't require the adapter; screws directly into the TH8S rod via a hole in the top.
