Monochrome Twist Puzzle

A 3×3 twist puzzle with recessed dice patterns instead of colored faces. Each face is identified by a number of dots, from one to six, allowing the entire puzzle to be printed using a single filament color.

The goal is to bring nine matching patterns together on each face and align their orientation. This adds an extra challenge: a standard solving method may leave some center pieces rotated, even when all matching patterns have been reunited.

Opposite faces follow the familiar dice arrangement: 1–6, 2–5, and 3–4.

Files included

The set contains 28 STL files:

  • 6 center pieces, each bearing one pattern.

  • 12 edge pieces, each bearing two patterns.

  • 8 corner pieces, each bearing three patterns.

  • 2 unchanged internal mechanism parts.

Each filename begins with its original part number, followed by the piece type and its face numbers.

Recessed patterns

The dice patterns occupy a 10 × 10 mm design area on each visible face. The dots are approximately 1.9 mm in diameter, recessed 0.6 mm into the surface.

Printing instructions

  1. Print the individual STL parts.

  2. Import the files at 100% scale. A layer height of 0.20 mm gives good results.

  3. Follow the original model’s printing recommendations for material, supports, and other settings.

  4. Print a test piece before committing to the complete set, particularly to check the recessed dots and your printer’s dimensional accuracy.

The assembled reference file is for viewing only:

assembly_reference_DO_NOT_PRINT.stl

It shows the 26 exterior pieces in their solved positions and does not include the two internal parts. Do not print this file as a single object.

Assemble the pieces so that all nine patterns on each face share the same orientation.

  • 2 and 3: the dots run diagonally from upper left to lower right.

  • 6: the dots form two horizontal rows of three.

  • On the four side faces, the top of each pattern points toward face 1.

  • On face 1, the top of the patterns points toward face 5.

  • On face 6, the top of the patterns points toward face 2.

Use the assembled reference model to check the placement and orientation of the corner and edge pieces.

Model verification

Each dice pattern appears exactly nine times, with no duplicate edge or corner combinations. All 26 engraved STL files were checked after export as watertight solids, each consisting of one connected component.
