This is an ergonomic soft-touch palm rest tailor-made for the Logitech MX Mechanical and Mechanical Mini, designed to make typing more comfortable and easy on your wrists. It features soft springy cushions made from TPU, with a texture customisable via CNC Kitchen's excellent BumpMesh utility (https://bumpmesh.com.) Use one of the 4 pre-made textured .stls, or download the .bumpmesh files and choose your own.
All files (except the connector plugs) are designed to print in a diagonal orientation for the best possible surface finish and minimal supports. All the necessary supports are engineered into the models and simply snap off after printing, slicer-generated supports are not used. This keeps material waste as low as possible.
The palm rest works whether you use the keyboard with the rear legs folded in or out, allowing you to adjust the typing angle to your comfort.
This project is fully 3D-printable on any printer that can handle PLA and TPU, no additional parts are required and the modular design should fit in basically any modern printer's build volume.
Texturing on https://bumpmesh.com is simple - unzip and load the provided project files and make sure you load both the model and the settings when prompted. Most of the necessary settings should already be set, including painting the areas of the model to be textured, so you just need to choose your texture, set the U and V scale and depth, then generate your mesh. You may use the provided test file if you want to test your pattern at a smaller scale before committing. If you're wondering what Bumpmesh is, see CNC Kitchen's video on the subject.
To print:
Download the relevant files for Full size or Mini (the connector is the same for both.)
Choose the texture for your cushions - Grid, smooth or use the provided bumpmesh projects to customise at https://bumpmesh.com.
Print the main body files out of a hard material (like PLA). No supports are needed besides those included in the model, but a brim is recommended.
Use the same material to print the connector plugs, 2x are needed for the mini version and 4x for the full size version. These hold the segments together.
Print the cushions out of TPU, using Gyroid infill for springiness. I used TPU 95A, with 2 exterior walls and 10% Gyroid infill, which provides a fairly firm cushion with a bit of give for comfort. You may vary these parameters according to your preference. Adaptive layer height is recommended, particularly depending on the pattern chosen, and Brim should be set to Auto.
To assemble:
Snap the supports off (they should snap off cleanly, but for the TPU cushions you may need help from a pair of flush cutters) and remove any brims.
Place the cushions inside the main bodies. On the sides, make sure that the built-in clips are inside the corresponding slots in the cushion.
Push the 2 (mini) or 4 (full size) connectors into the slots and use them to link the 2 (mini) or 3 (full size) sections of the main body together.
The palm rest is now fully assembled. Simply place the keyboard inside the palm rest and you're good to go.
Happy printing!
