OpenGrid Snap Puller

T-handle that pulls stuck snaps out of the tile

A one-piece tool for removing openGrid snaps (the threaded squares that press into the grid). It screws into the snap's own thread, so you get a proper handle to pull on — and a built-in jack for the ones that won't come out by hand.

No hardware, no supports, one print.

How it works

The tip carries the openGrid snap thread (Ø16 × 3 mm pitch, right-hand, same profile as the Multiconnect/openConnect screws), so it threads straight into any standard snap.

Pull mode — unscrew the connector from the snap, screw the puller in a couple of turns, pull with a slight wiggle. Covers most snaps.

Jack mode (not tested) — for snaps that are really stuck. Keep screwing in until the tip passes through the snap and touches the wall behind the tile. The screw can't go any further, so the snap climbs the thread instead: 3 mm out of the cell per turn, with full thread engagement the whole way. Two turns and the retaining nubs are clear of the groove — lift it out.

The thread is 11 mm long so that it reaches the wall through a Standard (6.8 mm) tile with stroke to spare. The stem is 36 mm so the T-bar clears holders in the neighbouring cells while you turn it.

Compatibility

- ✅ David D's original openGrid snaps (Standard and Lite) — anything with the standard threaded centre.

- ✅ Directional snaps, anti-rotation snaps, Multiboard-offset snaps with the openGrid thread.

- ⚠ Not for self-expanding snaps (mitufy's "Self-Expanding Snap" and the expanding option of his generator). Those grip harder the deeper a screw goes, so jack mode would lock them in. For those: remove the connector completely and pull with the puller screwed in only 2–3 mm.

- Jack mode needs a wall (or any solid surface) right behind the tile and a through thread in the snap. On drywall the Ø12 tip leaves no mark at normal pulling forces; if your wall is soft, use pull mode.

Use

opengrid_snap_puller_flat.stl

Recommended. Prints lying down on a flat ground into the stem, so the layers run along the pull direction. Strongest, no supports.

opengrid_snap_puller_vertical.stl

Prints standing on the T-bar, thread up. Fully round stem. Weaker across layers — use 100 % infill.

opengrid_snap_puller_vertical_M6_core.stl

Vertical version with a through hole for an M6 × 60 socket-head bolt (head pocket at the tip, nut + washer pocket in the T-bar). The steel takes the load; the plastic only transfers it through the thread.

Print settings

- Orientation: as exported. Flat version lies on the T-bar/stem flat; vertical versions stand on the T-bar.

- Material: PETG (what it was tested in). PLA works; avoid very flexible materials.

- Layer height: 0.12–0.16 mm — the thread flanks are 45°, finer layers make them smoother.

- Walls: 5–6, or 100 % infill. For the flat version this matters: the stem's interior is what carries the pull.

- Supports: none.

- ~30 cm³, roughly 35 g solid in PETG.

Customizer parameters

- print_flat — lying (default) or vertical.

- flat_depth — how deep the flat under the stem is (5 mm default, 9.8 mm wide flat on the Ø14 stem).

- t_bar_length / thickness / height, stem_diameter, stem_length — handle proportions. Make the stem longer if your wall has tall holders next to the snaps you remove.

- thread_length — 11 mm reaches the wall through a Standard tile; 8 is enough for Lite tiles or pull-only use.

- thread_major, tip_bevel — thread fit and lead-in. Reduce thread_major by 0.2 if your printer prints threads oversize.

- bore_diameter and pocket sizes — enable the steel core (6.5 for M6).
