A laptop stand that brings your screen up about 12 cm and tilts the laptop to 20 degrees, with open air all around it. The laptop rests on two side stands, a lip at the front stops it sliding, and two cross bars drop into tapered dovetail slots and wedge tight with a push. Fits laptops from 11 to 16 inches, up to about 2.5 kg. Four printed parts, no screws, no supports.
4 printed parts
25 × 25 × 10 cm assembled (L × W × H)
≈ 0.3 kg filament in total
246 mm bed length needed; the sides print flat, only 22 mm tall
Parts
Left side: A light truss with a 22 mm wide strip the laptop rests on at 20°, a 7 mm lip at the front, two tapered dovetail slots on the inside for the cross bars and two recesses underneath for rubber bumpers.
Size: 246 × 100 × 22 mm
Print: Lying on its outer face, slots up. No supports: every layer is the whole side view.
Filament: ≈ 101 g
Right side: The mirror image of the left side, with its slots facing the other way.
Size: 246 × 100 × 22 mm
Print: Lying on its outer face, slots up. No supports.
Filament: ≈ 101 g
Cross bar × 2: Holds the sides 208 mm apart. The dovetail on each end narrows towards the bottom, so it slides in freely and wedges tight when you press it down. One goes inside the lips, one at the back.
Size: 220 × 22 × 14 mm
Print: Standing on its flat bottom edge, rounded top up. No supports.
Filament: ≈ 61 g
What else you need
Nothing else: no screws, no glue. The cross bars lock in with a push.
Optional: four self-adhesive rubber bumpers, 10 mm across and about 3 mm thick, for the recesses under the sides. They stop the stand sliding while you type.
For the best posture, use an external keyboard and mouse, as with any laptop stand.
Print settings
0.20 mm layer height
4 walls
20% gyroid infill
PLA or PETG PETG if your laptop gets hot underneath
For a 0.4 mm nozzle. Filament amounts are estimates for these settings.
How to build it
Print the parts: Nothing needs supports. Print the sides lying on their outer face with the slots facing up, and the bars standing on their flat edge. Turn on elephant's foot compensation, or scrape the bottom edges of the bar ends, so the dovetails slide in cleanly.
Add the feet: Optional: stick a rubber bumper into each of the round recesses under the two sides.
Fit the front bar: Stand both sides up, lips at the front and slots facing each other. Lower a bar, rounded edge up, into the slots inside the lips and press both ends down firmly: the tapered dovetails wedge tight. If one bar sits a few millimetres higher than the other, that is just print tolerance.
Fit the back bar: Press the second bar into the slots at the back the same way. The stand should now stand square, without rocking.
Put your laptop on: Centre the laptop on the two sides with its front edge against the lips. It lies at 20° and the screen comes up about 12 cm. The lip is lower than the lid's edge, so the lid opens as usual.
Taking it apart: Lift the laptop off and push each bar up from underneath, close to its ends. A tap with the palm of your hand frees it.
