This is the X-1 Stinger. A 5W burning laser gun inspired by isaac879's project: https://github.com/isaac879/2.5W-laser-gun

Why is it called the X-1 Stinger? It's called that because if you get hit by the laser at close range, it stings! Boy does it sting. There is also a burning sensation that goes along with it due to the lasers' IR radiation, so practice caution when using a high-powered laser!

And keep in mind that 5W lasers or any (Class IV) are capable of causing minor burns, and they are particularly good at annihilating any pesky small insects (especially spiders).

So just as a friendly reminder:

USE CAUTION WHEN WIELDING!!!

& WEAR PROPER PROTECTIVE EYE WEAR!!

Assembly:

Now, the assembly of this glorified laser casing is pretty simple.

Just print the parts, and they should all slide into each other. Then just use 4 short (6-32) machine screws to hold the Back_Barrel and Front_Barrel together.

The Laser module is friction fitted into the Front_Barrel, so it should just slide on in. The Mode_Potentiometer goes into the small hole of the Back_Cover, so you can adjust the shooting modes, and the Back_Cover just gets friction fitted/push fitted into the Back_Barrel.

The N.O Limit switch just gets glued in place in the Grip and the 5mm indicator LED goes into the hole at the side of the Grip.

You may have to drill some of the holes out so the screws going through the Back_Barrel catches the Front_Barrel.

Notes:

  • The Magazine will be modified in the future to fit a Li-Ion battery. Right now, it just holds the wires that connect to my 12V power supply.

  • And the Magazine is friction fitted and slides along the rails on the Grip to load/unload it. You may have to wiggle it a bit to get it to fit and slide in/out.

Here is the Demo Video:

The circuit & code to allow the laser to shoot pulses can be found here: https://github.com/isaac879/2.5W-laser-gun

I just modified my circuit a bit to use an N.O limit switch instead of a 10K potentiometer.

To program the ATTiny85 you may refer to this link: https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/arjun/programming-attiny85-with-arduino-uno-afb829

Side Notes:

  • I noticed that my 2.5W laser shot much farther than my 5W laser, so keep that in mind when looking into which laser to get (Just be sure the laser can be controlled by PWM/has 3 pins: VCC, GND, PWM).

  • And If you do use a 2.5W laser, keep in mind that it may be smaller than the 5W laser module that this gun has been designed for, so you may have to either design a coupler for it, or find some creative way to wedge it in.

  • If you decide to use a 5W laser instead of a 2.5W (I found my 3 Pin, LT-20W-A (5W output) focus-able laser on AliExpress) just be sure to rate your wire accordingly. At full power (solid beam) it draws about 3A. I used breadboard jumper wires, and they get hot quite easily at that amperage, so be sure to use something a little more hefty.

  • The Sketchup (2019) file is included in case you want to make modifications to the design.

  • When making the circuit, be sure to make it as compact as possible, so it fits inside the gun. (Just don't make the circuit/PCB bigger than 120x38mm)

Parts I used:

N.O Limit Switch V-156-1C25

ATTINY85 Board

12V 3A Li-Ion Battery

All Potentiometers are 10K

The rest of the parts from the schematic can be found on AliExpress or any other electronics site.

Updates:

I will be making some Mods to this design in the future, so stay tuned.

These mods may include:

  • Housing for a 2.5W Laser Module
  • A bigger Mag to fit a Li-ion Battery (Added: 02-11-2023)
  • This is the battery I used: 12V 3A Li-Ion Battery Link
