Update 12 Oct 2019: The original design worked pretty well, but wasn't perfect. I redesigned it from scratch in Fusion 360. There are now three pieces:

  • Cateye cage top bolt locator

  • Cateye cage top bolt spacer

  • Cateye cage bottom bolt locator

The top bolt locator goes between the cage and the frame. The top bolt spacer goes in the top of the cage and is designed to be used with an M5 flat head screw to spread the load across multiple layers. (see the photo) The lower bolt locator goes in the large rectangular lower hole and should be used with a standard M5 water bottle cage bolt, and I suggest a larger diameter washer to spread the load.

The first photo shows this cage after several training rides and a very technical 120km endurance race. It held the bottle perfectly, and showed no wear or damage afterwards.

Cateye makes one of the best water bottle cages available, the BC-100. The design has been around for many years under various brand names, but it's a solid design, reasonably light, and tremendously durable. Because of that, we use it on several of our bikes. However, on my wife's Scott Scale, the water bottle cage mounts on the seat tube are strangely high, and when a bottle cage is mounted there, there isn't even enough room for a small bottle. (see the photos)

It might be possible to use an offset mount like the Wolftooth B-Rad system, or this design, but on this frame that would make the bottle interfere with the cage on the down tube. To avoid this, I use these simple mounts to drop the cage by not using the standard mount points.

To use these spacers, you'll need to make sure you've got long enough M5 screws - at least 15mm should be sufficient, depending on your frame. Apply blue LocTite (242) to the threads and insert the screws through these spacers with the screw head on the wide side of the spacers. Insert the spacers with the top spacer in the cutout near the top, and the bottom spacer in the cutout between the stock bottle mounts. Tighten lightly, and you're good to go.

Print instructions

Print with many shells, at least four. Because it's used in compression, 100% infill isn't a bad idea as well. Should not require supports when oriented properly. I usually go with 0.2mm layer heights with a 0.4mm nozzle, but whatever works for you is good.
