This tool is used to align your the X Gantry on an Ender 3 with the base.

See the video Alex Kenis created here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN0MlQMMew0&t=1354s

In this video Alex used CD cases to level the gantry. These tools perform the same function simply clip to the front of the vertical extrusions on either side of the frame so you don't have to hold them in place.

Note my printer in the photos has been heavily modified. Custom hot end duct, cable chains, rear electronics box, dual Z steppers, direct drive etc. These tools should still work with a stock Ender 3 though.

Post-Printing

Step 1

Print two leveling tools. I used PETG, PLA is probably fine though.

Step 2

Turn off the printer, and unplug the Z Axis stepper motor

Step 3

Clip the tools to the the front of the frame as shown. Make sure the bottom of the tools rest on the horizontal base extrusions.

Step 4

Move the X axis gantry down so that it rests on the leveling tools.

Step 5

Start to drill a hole through the inside access hole on the back of the left X gantry slide assembly.

Only drill enough to mark the start of the hole. DO NOT DRILL a complete hole. I used a 1/8" bit here.

Make sure the left side of the X Gantry is resting on the leveling tool when drilling the hole. If your gantry is way out of alignment you may need to temporarily remove the tool on the right side while drilling this hole.

Step 6

Move the X Gantry up and continue drilling the hole through the frame. I started with a 1/8" bit, and then increased to a 3/16" bit.

Step 7

Move the X gantry back down onto the leveling tools. Loosen the the screw that can now be accessed through the hole you just drilled.

Step 8

Loosen the two screws that attach the X Gantry extrusion to the right slider assembly.

Note: My Ender 3 has a dual Z upgrade so your printer might look a little different then the photos below.

Step 9

Adjust the eccentric nuts of the left and right slider assemblies. Tight enough so that all three wheels on each side can not be turned easily, but not crazy tight or you'll prematurely wear out the wheels.

Step 10

Make sure the X Gantry is resting on the leveling tools and tighten the screws loosened in Step 7 and 8 above.

Step 11

Raise the X Gantry, remove the leveling tools,
