We recently purchased a Labelwriter 450 for our office which uses a spindle to hold spools of labels for the machine. I find myself using different types of labels for different purposes (stamps, address labels, file folder labels, etc.) and didn't want to have to switch spools every time I needed to print on something different. This piece is very similar to the original, the biggest difference is that the spool from the original manufacturer has a ratcheting mechanism so that you can just press on the backer plate and mine uses a screw mechanism to serve that purpose. Printed in PLA with 0.2 layer height with the Pretty PLA Profiles from prusaprofiles.com, but I'm sure it would do well with PETG or any other type of filament when printed correctly. I didn't want to have to print in 3 pieces, so this build requires support material on the shaft piece, I'm not a huge fan of the finish that leaves on the surface, but I'm not especially adept at designing locking joints yet, so it is what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Materials

I printed this in Jessie PLA from Printed Solid But it should work fine with any Filament as long as your printer has the tolerances for the threads to work

Infill and Perimeters

I just used standard infill which seems to be fine. The spindle doesn't have any real stresses when used in the computer since the labels are being pulled directly by the machine (as opposed to the spindle being turned to feed the paper). The Shaft is large enough to withstand the rotational torque of screwing on the backer, for me, if you have problems you might add a couple of perimeters for strength.

Supports

Supports are Required for this build. the large plate for the spool guide had to be offset from the end of the shaft far enough for it to hang in the printer.
