Models

Two models are included, one with cylindrical prongs and one without. If your post does not have appropriate holes to mate with the four prongs on the under side, choose the “No prongs” model. The post extrusion profile that works with the prongs is pictured on the right.

Take your choice of STEP or STL for either model.

Printing suggestions

In my experience, it prints best in its default orientation when opened in PrusaSlicer (top side up), with supports for the prongs and spacing tabs found on the underside of the model. You may also want to use a brim or glue stick for bed adhesion.

Post-processing

The wide, flat surfaces on the finished print allow for easy painting. I printed my caps in Prusament PLA, washed them with hand soap, dried them, and then spray painted with flat white spray paint. No sanding required before painting, unless you want to remove the layer lines. I used Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint, if anyone's interested.

If you're not going to paint it, probably don't use PLA, as it won't stand up to UV and heat.

Backstory

Our rental home was missing a post cap on the front porch, and the one that remained was very loose, and kept getting blown off by the wind. So I rebuilt the preexisting cap in OnShape, gave it tighter tolerances, and added prongs that could fit into the metal post's extrusion profile. The “No prongs” cap would also scale well for other posts sizes, just give it a try!
