At home I run Home Assistant to automate some things. My Sun screen with Somfy IO motor is connected to a Tahoma Switch. In order to automaticly close when it starts to rain, I wanted a rain sensor.
Unfortunately Somfy rain sensors are VERY expensive. So I wanted to ‘create’ something myself.
From AliExpress I ordered a Zigbee Water Sensor which is meant to detect water leakage from dishwasher, washing machine, etc. But this sensor on itself is useless for my application.
Also I ordered a simple rain sensor PCB from AliExpress.
Total cost? Less than €10,-
I opened the water leakage sensor, soldered 2 wires on the detection pads, drilled 2 holes in the casing which the wires go through. Connected the wires to the rain sensor PCB and designed a casing.
Put everything together and you have a cheap working rain sensor which costs 20x less than an original Somfy.
Can be used with many Zigbee Applications. My rain sensor is connected to Tahoma Switch, which is connected to Home Assistant. But Home Assistant isn't needed to close the sun screen, the Tahoma Swich can also do the job.
I don't know how long the CR2032 battery will last or the rain sensor PCB but time will tell.
[Update] not much time needed unfortunately. In rain, the sensor drains the battery very quickly so I'll have to add additional power supply. I'm thinking a 18650 li-ion cel with small solar panel.b[/update]
