UPDATED

The V2 files now screw from the OUTSIDE for easier installation. if using the V2 files install the heatset inserts into the inner plate instead of the outer plate. Also included is a version that uses M4 screws and heatsets.

A dry box can drastically improve your print quality, but they're big, bulky, and kind of expensive. I set out to create a solution that was super cheap and fit my current filament storage. 2 plates mount to the sides of a Mylar bag and a hollow tube runs between them. with the tube set in the center hole of the filament spool, you can now feed the filament out of the bag while keeping it dry.

materials needed:

1X resealable Mylar Bag

10X m3 heat set inserts

10X m3 screws

10cm~ PTFE tube

Desiccant

print the following:

2X Inner Plate

2X Outer Plate

1X Tube

1X outer guide for ptfe

1X inner guide for ptfe

Instructions:

  1. Set 4 heat-set inserts into each of the outer plates and 2 in the inner guide.
  2. roughly center 1 inner plate on the inside of 1 side of the Mylar bag. Poke 1 M3 screw through the wall of the bag and screw it loosely into one of the threads on the outer plate. make sure the plates are centered on the side of the bag and loosely screw the other 3 screws through the inner plate to the outer plate. Once all 4 screws are holding everything in place, tighten them down.
  3. cut or tear away the Mylar in the center hole created by the 2 plates.
  4. repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other plates on the opposite side of the bag. try and line up the second set of plates with the first set of plates, the flexibility of the bag gives you some leeway but try to keep them lined up.
  5. Take your filament spool and set it into the bag. Put the tube through the hole in the spool and thread it into one of the threads on the outer plates. line up the other outer plate and use the grips to thread the other plate. the spool should now be able to spin freely in the bag on the tube.
  6. put the inner guide in the inner corner of the bag, near the top of the spool. line up the outer guide with the inner guide on the outside of the bag, and screw the outer guide to the inner guide through the Mylar bag. Poke a hole in the Mylar bag through the hole made by the inner and outer guide and set the PTFE tube halfway into the guide.
  7. feed the filament through the PTFE tube and out of the bag. Put some desiccant in the bottom of the bag and seal it shut. The drybag is now ready to use.
