I developed this little tool to make it easier to measure out about 30cc of colour change silica gel beads. It gives me approximately (what I consider to be) the right amount for an organza bag to pack into a ziplock bag with a spool of filament. It has three printed parts, a main body (the biggest part), a hinged flap and a clip-on funnel part. You will also need two 3mm x 8mm magnets and a paper clip for the hinge pin.
Printing: I printed with a brim on the wide end of the main body. No support is needed. Pause about halfway up the magnet slot and drop a magnet in. After you resume printing that magnet will become captive in the slot on the outside of the main body.
After printing install the second magnet in the pocket on the flap. The flap will be installed inside the body with its magnet facing down and toward the magnet on the outside. Make sure to orient the magnets so they attract each other through the plastic. Glue the flap magnet in place with your choice of glue. I used hot melt. Be very careful not to get glue outside the pocket.
Straighten a medium sized paper clip to make a hinge pin. Install the flap and pin, with the flap magnet facing down (narrow end). I used some carefully applied hot melt glue to secure the hinge pin. It is very important that the hinge allows the flat to move freely.
Test the mechanism by holding it narrow side down. The flap should close itself due to magnet action. Pull the outside magnet up and the flap should drop. Drop the magnet and it should close the flap again. Sand the flap if necessary to eliminate any rubbing.
When it is working reliably clip the small funnel piece into place.
To use the dispensing funnel fill the required quantity of desiccant into the top (there's a ridge at about 30cc), insert the narrow funnel end into whatever you want the desiccant in, then pull the magnet up to release the flap. Release the magnet and the flap should close.
The idea could no doubt be applied to other applications, such as baking. Larger versions would be limited by the strength of the magnets for achieving the self closing action.
