A simple printable method using stock parts to simplifier placing shim stacks unders the stock 8dia steel supports. Consists of a cap that can contain the needed shims over the stock metal support allowing easy placement between the support frame and bed using the stock bolts.
Fusion 360 file supplied so you can customise the shim heights.
The STL provided has
- 0.25mm Cap shim, other shims can be placed inside this.
- 0.25mm shim
- 0.50mm shim
- 1.00mm shim
- Can alter the Fusion 360 file for your on shims
- Only restriction would be the length of the stock bolts.
- If using high bed temperature print in PETG or ABS
I was using thin steel washers but they were very difficult to fit especially if more than one needed. Steps I used:
- Use the ABL grid measurements to check Bed Level and Gantry Tilt. Klipper has both Bed Level Display and Screw Tilt that can be used. For Marlin you will need to read the guides to extract these tables.
- Check and correct for the average X Gantry Tilt by adjusting the mechanical stops with duct tape shims to one side or the other.
- Pick one of the supports as a Base figure and estimate shims needed. I kept the 4 inners untouched and only corrected 3 of the outer supports to reduce range from 1mm to <0.25mm.
- Note that due to the bed frame flexibility a change on and external support will also apply approximately half the change on the closest internal support and vice versa.
That's close enough to give decent flat bases for large models. You don't need to do this for successful prints and first layers as, by accident, discovered that ABL is perfectly capable of successfully printing and compensating for a 5mm gantry tilt. Shims and Spacers will also not fix local height spikes in bed that can affect layers or bubbling of the black reverse stock surface. If found my stock bed had a fold in it that I had to correct by carefully bending it and checking it.
Also found that the SV06+ frame needs to be on a stiff and flat surface otherwise the frame can twist leading to unreliable levelling to the x axis rods twisting. I suspect this means flexible vibration dampers under the frame could also aggravate frame twist.
