My new phone doesn't fit in my old stand, so time for a new one.
I wanted to make sure that it lasts longer though, so I added some “future-proofing”:
- The sides are open to support any width of phone,
- The cable is held by a separate retainer, so if the cable breaks I can just reprint that small part.
What Do You Need To Do?
- Print the stand.stl file.
For stability I recommend 3 perimeters and at least 15% infill.
(The heavier it is, the harder it will be to knock over)
I used rainbow silk PLA, but any material should be suitable.
Supports are recommended on the area underneath the plug.
- Find a USB-C cable.
A shorter plug will be more likely to fit in the availble height.
A rubberised material will be easier to push into the retainer.
If the cable is excessively thick it may not fit flush in the tunnel.
- Print one of the retainer*.stl files to suit your cable.
Measure the overall width and depth of the plug to match the right retainer.
One of the dimensions should be close to ensure a good friction fit.
(I measured a few cables on my desk - if you need another combination just ask)
- Find 2 x M3 screws. (4-40?)
Less than 10 mm long. (3/8"?)
Or worst-case, I suppose you could just glue the retainer into the stand.
- Feed the USB cable from the back of the stand, under the bridge, and back out.
- Push the retainer piece onto the plug, being mindful of orientation. (check the photos)
To be flush with the top of the dock it should protrude by 2mm.
(If your phone has a protective case, you might want the plug to stick out a little further)
- Place the retainer into its mounting point, and fasten the screws.
Check now that the plug is in the right place.
- Pull back on the cable, bending the strain relief through the low point of bridge, and out the back of the stand.
If the cable falls out of the tunnel, some tape will keep it in place.
If the cable is too thick for the stand to sit flat, filing the ceiling may help.
- Set it upright, plug it in, attach your phone… success! Hopefully.😅
FAQ
- My plug doesn't fit!
Erm, sorry. USB-C cables aren't standardised.
If the plug is a bit loose, maybe wrap a layer or two of tape around it first.
If the plug is a little too big, maybe some filing will help.
If the plug is way out of size, tell me the dimensions.
- My phone doesn't fit!
It's pretty easy to adjust the model, tell me how thick is your phone + case, and if the plug is in the middle or offset toward the front or back of the phone.
