Ikea KALLAX cubes are used all over the world and they lack a good low profile bin. That gets fixed now.

When cruising an IKEA for inspiration with a friend last month it was brought to my attention that the KALLAX cubes that everyone knows, loves, and has lacks a truly efficient double drawer option. Yes, they do sell drawers for them but when you factor in the rail hardware and the pathetically small sidewalls on them you realize you're getting only a fraction of the usable volume. This seemed like a good opportunity to take advantage of the Prusa XL build volume.
Originally I set out to do just the double bins but that quickly led to creating a true parametric option for making bins of various heights as well as the ability to easily create a drilling template for the guide rails. ALL INCLUDED. Just feed the Fusion 360 file the number of bins you want to fit in one cube and the rest is done for you!
NOTES
- Thicker nozzle recommended. Pre-Sliced for 0.8mm nozzle. PETG also recommended.
- I use a modifier to make the bottom of the bin a mesh screen and not solid plastic. This is still plenty strong and speeds up the print time, makes it less prone to warp or blob extra plastic onto the nozzle.
- Unless you enclose your XL you will very likely get curl at the corners no matter what. This is pretty normal for rectangular geometry at this size. I default to a wide bin gap to allow loose tolerance for fitment because of this. Feel free to play with it or remix for better stability as it works for your application.
- I don't recommend using less than a 4.5mm wall thickness or the walls will start to warp as they cool
- A rail set isn't really necessary for the bottom shelf bin
- To generate your drilling template simply export the generated RailMountTemplate as DXF from the KallaxRef Cube Component. Print at 100% and tape together or just print full scale on an 8.5"x11" sheet and use the first two holes, set the rail and then use the guide to pilot the last hole.
