Created a box to relocate my PC's Power and Reset buttons within reach instead of walking around to the other side of my desk. Just wanted something simple but ended up learning how to create threaded parts. It was a fun journey with a lot of printed test pieces.
Box Dimensions
Ext. 60mm x 35mm x 74mm
Int. 48mm x 23mm x 62mm
8 pegs/holes are more of a guide for alignment than anything. I glued the pieces together.
Switch holes are 16.1mm for these 16mm switches from AliExpress. Actual size of the switch is 15.8mm with a 18mm collar. The price has doubled since I bought them. Hopefully the link sticks around for a while.
Settings
Bolts - 100% infill. No Supports.
Housings - Tree supports. Used 15% infill but for the application you may want to reduce down to around 10%. It doesn't save much filament but if you ever need to break it open it would be easier.. As I mentioned, have made a few test pieces. I didn't tear down my original box until this final version was printed. That is when I realized it was a pain since you don't want to damage anything inside.
Non-printed parts used
2 - #8 x 1" Wood Screws
1 - 16mm Power Switch
1 - 16mm Reset Switch
This reset switch takes place of the HDD LED. After the fact I almost wish I purchased a cool orange or something instead of the white but oh well. Think about it though if you are going down this path.
I also needed to extend the length of the wire. These come with 60cm cables but I needed closer to 100cm. For the 8 wires that is about 144" (12') or 320cm - 22 AWG wire. Also need something to extend everything. I went with solder, electrical tape and heat shrink. If you want hair on your chest you can just twist the wires together and put a little electrical tape on them. It will probably be fine.
Steps - Pretty simple but I want to lay it out because if you mess up a step and get too far it is just annoying. :)
Step 1 - Print the parts
Step 2 - Pull wires through back of box
Step 3 - Mount switches to the front of the box with the locking ring on the inside
Use something small like an hex key/screwdriver to tighten the lock rings.
Step 4 - Connect wires to the switches and to your PC
I suggest to test the buttons to make sure everything is correct.
Step 5 - Find the perfect place to mount the box and screw it into place
I used #8 wood screws. It won't take anything bigger but you could go a small step down.
Step 6 - Screw in plastic caps
Step 7 - Test buttons (again if you already did once). Make sure it is how you want it before you glue it together. You can always remove the caps to move the box but you cannot access the wires to the buttons without destroying the box.
Step 8 - Glue the box together if you want. I am telling myself I will give it 1 week before I glue it together so it will probably be unglued for a few years…
