DIMM blanks are used to fill unused memory DIMM slots in a rack-mount server. Filling these slots helps to ensure that airflow through the server from the fans is directed as designed, optimizing cooling.

Included are DIMM blanks compatible with DDR3 and DDR4 sockets. These 3D-printable blanks roughly follow the shape of OEM DIMM blanks, with a couple of small changes:

  • Most of the OEM blanks have lips or ridges along the top edges on both sides, presumably to help with removal, or perhaps for some airflow effect. I made these DIMM blanks totally flat on one side to simplify printing.
  • OEM blanks have cutouts in the pin area of the DIMM where the pins normally insert into the socket. Presumably this is to prevent unnecessary contact/rubbing on the pins, or perhaps it is an ESD consideration. I decided to include small tabs in this area. These tabs insert into the sockets to make sure that the thin blanks remain straight and do not bow in the middle, ensuring correct airflow. On the DDR3 blank, the tabs are located in the usual notch position. On the DDR4 blank, there is a single tab just to the side of the normal notch. In both cases, the tabs insert into areas of the sockets with no pins, and should be indexed just like normal sticks of RAM. Line up the notch.

I tried several different thicknesses for these blanks to ensure a good fit. Even .05mm makes a big difference in how much or little force is required to insert the blanks in the sockets. I hope I struck a good balance between secure fit and ease of insertion. The blanks clip in firmly like normal DIMMs, and even if there is a little side-to-side play based on the exact tolerances of your DIMM sockets, the blanks aren't going anywhere.

Your print settings could also affect the final thickness of the blanks of course. I printed with the 0.12mm High Quality profile in Orca Slicer for my Bambu A1.

Hopefully your RAM isn't getting hot enough to soften PLA, but it's still probably a good idea to print in a more heat resistant filament like PETG or ABS. I used PETG.

Update: I added a “universal” DIMM blank that works with DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5. It is a compromise in dimensions between the three types.
