I’ve tried existing models - they‘re simply not tight enough to reliably fit on the spool and/or the AMS without slipping off, so I decided to make my own which holds better.

This model features slots on the adapter to allow for using spacers of different height and material for different spool inner diameters and fit options.

More than enough to hold its own weight!

A .step file is included for changing the spacer size (and if you want to edit any part of the model).
Set parameter “d” to the inner diameter of your spool + ~1mm. If the fit is way too tight, reduce the diameter slightly and print the spacers again.
Set parameter “w” to the height/depth of your spool. This should be a few mm more.

The default values are fit for plastic Jayo 1.1kg spools.

With normal spacers, the fit should be just about right. If it might slip off, the cover can be used. Soft spacer should be a tougher fit, but much more tight.

The slim cover can be used to secure the spacers without needing a taller adapter. However, if the spacers aren't tight enough for the filament, the spool could potentially slip off.
Therefore, it is recommended that the cover side faces inwards. This is also recommended for the larger cover.

There includes 2 files for the adapter reel with “PLA” and “PETG” marked on it. You are of course free to edit this using the .step file.

Print settings:

This model has been designed for FDM printing.
Refer to the pictures for printing orientation. All parts should be correctly oriented by default except for the cover which will need to be rotated 180 degrees.

Adapter, normal spacer, cover
  • Material: PLA, PETG, etc. Any non-flex materials should work. Don’t use CF/glass composites (unless you want to mess up your AMS/spool). Tested with PLA.
  • Layer height: any reasonable height, tested with 0.28mm.
  • Nozzle: any reasonable size, tested with 0.4mm.
  • Infill: 10% or higher. Doesn’t matter for the spacer. Tested with 10% gyroid infill.
  • Bed adhesion: print the spacers with a brim. Adapter and cover can also use a brim if you are concerned about warping.
  • Supports: none.
Soft spacer
  • Material: TPU, ~95A. Don’t use CF/glass composites (unless you want to mess up your AMS/spool).
  • Layer height: any reasonable height.
  • Nozzle: any reasonable size.
  • Infill: doesn’t matter.
  • Bed adhesion: a brim is recommended.
  • Supports: none.

Assembly

A hammer can be used if necessary. The adapter should still work even if the spacers snap along the layer lines during assembly.

  1. Clean up brims, stringing, etc.
  2. Slide the spacers into the slots of the adapter, use glue if necessary.
  3. Place the spool onto the adapter. Some force might be required.
  4. Place the cover on the spool if necessary

Feedback and comments are always appreciated!

This model has been printed and tested by me using Jayo Matte Black filament using above settings on my Bambu Lab A1. The soft TPU spacer hasn't been tested yet.
