I was trying to think of a problem I had in school that could be solved with a 3D print. I couldn't come up with a 3D printable solution to not fitting in or not wanting to do my homework, but did come up with something to help a more minor problem.

I had a horrible time getting my locker open as a kid. It seemed like I was always either forgetting the combination, or how to spin the dial to open it. It was frustrating! I would try writing the combination down on pieces of paper, but as I fidgeted throughout the day they'd get lost or destroyed. I tried storing my combo in my phone, but it would take forever to find where in my notes or photos it was saved; plus some schools don't even allow phones anymore. I tried writing the combo in my pencil box, but then I had to dig through my backpack when I wanted to open my locker, and my classmates would see it every time I needed a pencil, which could cause issues in some settings.

I created this Combo Keeper to help students of all ages keep track of their locker combinations. It prints quickly and easily, with a simple flexible hinge. It has basic instructions as well as a space to either write the combination(s) or affix a piece of tape. it can be secured to a keychain, lanyard or inside a backpack with a standard key ring, but also fits nicely in almost any pocket. It's slim and discreet, and the flat cover can be easily decorated with stickers or permanent marker if desired.

I printed the test model pictured in PLA+ with .2 layer height. I find Hilbert Curve on the top surface gives a good texture for writing on. I used a lighter to (very carefully!) apply a bit of heat to the hinge while the keeper was closed which helps it stay closed even if it doesn’t snap shut completely. I wanted it to be really easy to open but still keep the combinations hidden.
