A simple recirculating air filter system for the Qidi Q1 Pro. Reuses existing fans and components to seal off the printer chamber, and remove particles and chemicals from the closed printer chamber during printing.
In contrast to other designs, this is hard mounted to the printer body and has plenty of clearance to the build plate.
Additional required parts
- 4x M3 machine screws, length 18-20 mm
- 4x M3x4x5 heat-set threaded inserts (the standard Voron size)
- 2x HEPA filters, size 80x40x15, as are used in the BentoBox filter
- (Optional) activated carbon pellets, acid-free
Printing
Print in a high-temperature filament (ABS, nylon, PC). Prototypes were in ABS-GF and PC-CF and both worked well. Orient the main filter body upside down on the build plate; it should print without supports.
The bottom cover slide may need to be adjusted slightly depending on your filament properties, to give a snug fit. I found I needed +/- 1 mm in width between ABS and PC.
After printing, remove the four design support panels from the main filter body: one covering the fan outlet, one internal to the fan space, and two covering the two filter mounting holes.
Assembly
- Insert the 4x heat-set threaded inserts into the holes on the fan mount of the main filter body.
- Remove the back panel of the printer and unplug and remove the circulation fan (blue plug).
- Use the 4x M3 machine screws to screw the circulation fan into the filter body, with the sticker facing outward.
- Push the 2x HEPA filters into the two mounting holes on the main filter.
- (Optionally) Add activated carbon pellets to the bottom chamber of the main filter body, behind the HEPA filter mounting points.
- Slide the cover slide in to the bottom of the main filter body.
- Feed the fan cable through the slot on the base plate, and mount the base plate to the back of the printer using the original fan mounting screws. There should just be enough length to gently hold the plate in place. See photos for reference.
- Plug the fan back in to the blue socket. There should be enough cable for this to just reach.
- Tie off any loose excess cable with a cable tie passed through the channel on the main filter body.
Usage
The circulation fan (which previously vented chamber air to the back of the printer) now really does circulate air and filter it. Use this fan during printing to filter the chamber air without losing heat. You may wish to modify the slicer's machine gcode settings to switch this fan on and off automatically, using for example:
SET_FAN_SPEED FAN=chamber_circulation_fan SPEED=255to switch the fan on in the Machine start G-code, and
SET_FAN_SPEED FAN=chamber_circulation_fan SPEED=0to switch the fan off in the Machine end G-code.
