The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a high-speed, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force to gather intelligence and photograph sites that were out of reach of spy satellites:

  • Intelligence gathering: The Blackbird was used to gather intelligence on enemy capabilities and movements. It provided vital information for U.S. foreign policy, including during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and the 1986 raid on Libya.

  • Bomb damage assessment: The Blackbird was used to assess bomb damage.

  • Strategic reconnaissance: The Blackbird was used for strategic reconnaissance missions.

  • Engineering tests: NASA used three Blackbirds for engineering tests on high altitude, high speed, and high heat conditions.

The Blackbird was the world's fastest and highest-flying manned aircraft, capable of flying at Mach 3.2, which is over three times the speed of sound. Its unique design included a sleek, slender body and revolutionary engines that used a special fuel called JP-7.

The Blackbird was in service from 1964 to 1998.
