About the Design

I have found that some cardboard filament spools will not roll smoothly if they are damaged. Also, the cardboard spools have a tendency to make cardboard dust on some of my printers which is a problem.   I created two versions of this thin PETG spool insert to assist cardboard spools to turn consistently and cleanly.    I own several printers including the new Flashforge AD5X which has very unique spool holders.  The AD5X spool holders get coated in cardboard dust and that dust drops down onto the other filament spools.  My solution is to print some spool inserts!!

2 different models are included here.

  • a flexible fluted version for use on most spool holders.
  • a solid version for use on the new Flashforge AD5X printers, that have rubber coated spool holders.

Printing Instructions

  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • 4 walls
  • 0.22 layer height
  • PETG (preferred)
  • 15% infill (doesn't really matter)
  • No supports
  • Use the Randomize the seams in OrcaSlicer to randomize the inner bumps

Print with the flat end on the build plate.

I hope that this helps with your printing experience of filament on carboard spools.

*the design may receive additional iterations in the design.
