This vase was created entirely using the Function Playground web app — simply by combining a few mathematical functions. It's a simple example to show what kind of beautiful, custom designs you can generate with just a few clicks.
About the App
Function Playground is a free, browser-based design tool for generating 3D vase shapes using a modular function grid. It runs completely offline, right in your browser—no login, installation, or account needed. All calculations happen locally, so the only limit is the performance of your device and browser.
Getting started is easy:
👉 Launch the App: https://metikumi.com/tools/function-play/
Once you’ve created a design you like, just export it as an STL file and open it in your slicer. It’s ideal for vase mode prints and experimenting with mathematical structures.
You can also:
- Save your project as a
.jsonfile - Share your design instantly via a URL
- Reload past work and continue editing anytime
The Example Design
Want to start with this exact vase?
👉 Click here to load the project
Or, within the app, simply load “example_03” from the preset examples menu.
This design is intended as a gentle starting point—try tweaking the settings, modifying some waveforms, and see how easily you can create your own variations.

About the Print
The model shown in the photos is printed directly from this design on a Prusa XL using:
- A 0.8 mm nozzle
- Extrudr Wood filament
- Perimeter width: increased to 1.4 mm
(This slight "squish" gives the vase a beautiful soft wood texture.)
The print in the photos is exactly the model published here. I printed it on a Prusa XL, using a 0.8mm nozzle with the Extrudr Wood Filament. I also adjusted the perimeter width to extreme 1.4mm, squishing the filament a bit outwards to create this wonderful soft wooden surface.
More Examples from the App
If you're looking for inspiration or a starting point, check out the file section “Example Models from Function Playground”. There you'll find a collection of models exported directly from the Function Playground app. To use one as a base for your own design, simply open the app, load the example using its number, and start adjusting the parameters to make it your own.
