I created a circular disc with a small space to hold a magnet to glue under 40k models in FreeCAD. The magnets I used were these from the K&J Magnetics website.

I used gorilla glue brand superglue first to glue the magnets in and after to glue the plastic disc to the miniatures and I HIGHLY recommend printing off a pair of plastic tweezers. I used the largest one from below.

For metal I cut steel plate from Ace hardware which I cut with 24 gauge cutters. Even with those it was a bit of a pain to cut the steel and it didn't come out completely straight. A rotary cutter is probably the correct tool to use.
I tried using elmers glue to attach the steel plate to plastic, which apparently makes steel rust like crazy so don't do that. In the end I super glued the steel to the plastic, and roughed up the plastic a bit with sandpaper to help the two surfaces stick.
