If you’ve got a Robomow RT series lawnmower and a yard that’s less than perfectly manicured, you’ve probably run into the same problems I did. The stock wheels with their aggressive blades might look tough, but they’re actually the source of a lot of headaches.
In my case, those original wheels caused:
- Digging in loose soil, leaving the mower stuck and spinning
- Debris jamming the threads, grass clippings, twigs, acorns, and leaves constantly got stuck between the ‘blades’
- Torn-up turf during tank turns, especially along the perimeter wire where 90° turns are common
- A very bumpy ride at higher speeds
So, I designed better wheels! My redesigned wheels feature 50 blunt spikes, laid out in two offset rows. This updated tread pattern:
- Improves traction on soft or uneven terrain
- Prevents digging, keeping the mower moving instead of getting stuck
- Minimizes damage, making it far gentler during turns
- Stays clean because the shape and spacing of the spikes
- Rolls smoother at higher speeds
The result? I no longer have to babysit the mower. It now flawlessly navigates the yard without getting stuck, and returns to the dock without leaving ruts along the perimeter.
I designed for easy 3D printing. These wheels print without support.
I made the first set out of PLA and that holds up much better than I expected.
I printed them with 4 wall loops and cubic infill for strength.
For long-term durability, I do recommend printing in ABS or ASA.
Tip:
It's important that the wheel hub fits snugly on the Robomow's drive axle. The design is dimensionally nominal, but depending on your printer’s tolerances, you may need to fine-tune the fit. Most slicers offer XY hole compensation. Use this feature if needed to dial in a tight, secure fit.
If your Robomow RT struggles like mine did, this wheel upgrade is a game-changer.
