Small GPS dongle for the QMX to set time and Maidenhead.
Items used:
GPS used is a Beitian BE-280 with allows for 9600 bps and the 1Hz pulse. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BV6295F9)
3.5mm TRS jack (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PFZ8XKP). Tapped the hole in the base with a M8x1 tap.
USB-A Pigtail (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS6WHP3R)
TTL to USB adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LODGRV8)
Optional: JST MX 1.25 Connector Kit (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DSFNXRQ5)
Pre-work:
The BE-280 comes preprogramed with a higher baud than what the QMX wants to see (9600). You need the “u-centersetup_V22.07.zip” file from https://www.beitian.com/en/h-col-129.html. Additionally, I needed the driver for the TTL-USB adapter (https://www.silabs.com/software-and-tools/usb-to-uart-bridge-vcp-drivers?tab=downloads) as well as Visual Studio 2013 runtime libraries (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170) Follow the instructions on the attached PDF to change the baud rate.
Instructions:
- Tap TRS connector hole with M8x1.0 tap
- Solder 6ish cm JST MX pigtails to the tip, ring, and sleeve of the 3.5mm jack and tread into hole. Do no allow wires to twist.
- Solder USB 5V to PIN 5 pad and GND to PIN 2 pad on GPS unit. Alternately, splice GND with wire coming from 3.5mm Sleeve and solder a JST MX pigtail to the USB 5V and connect to PIN 5.
- Create JST MX connector. (Follow diagram)
- Put everything into place and snap on the lid.
