Note: If you are able to print ABS I highly recommend using this variant instead:
Please use and adjust the OpenSCAD file!
It is highly probable your specific spool will need adjustments.
My requirements for a dry box are:
- minimal hole drilling, to keep it as airtight as possible.
- minimal filament use. Why use more when you can use less?
After looking at some models I found one I liked very much. However, the screw is too wide for the particular box I bought, and making it shorter made it too narrow for my spool.
I opted to design a custom spool holder instead. After a few tries I found a design that's just a bit too loose.
Materials used:
- Scotch tape, for marking and increasing diameter incrementally (for better fit).
- Hot glue.
- Airtight box. I use https://www.temu.com/goods.html?goods_id=601099779440746, which is actually a tiny bit too narrow for a 200 outer, 60mm wide spool.
- 608 bearings.
- Graphite pencil, for marking mount positions.
Instructions:
1. Take measurements of the spool and adjust the parameters in the OpenSCAD file.
You may also want to measure the bearings and adjust slightly if they're particularly cheap.
2. Print out parts. 2x spool holder and 2x mount.
3. Assemble the spool holders and the mounts.
If it is too loose, wrap Scotch tape around until it is satisfactorily tight.
4. Put it in the box and adjust position until satisified.
Then put Scotch tape on the outside of the box over the center of the mounts.
Mark positions of the mounts with the pencil.
5. Take the assembly aparts.
Use hot glue gun on the mounts.
Carefully stick the mounts to the box.
When done, let the glue cure overnight.
6. Done! Put the spool in gently and close the box.
