I have created this box kite to have some fun with my daughter outside: it uses commonly available materials and is easy to assemble and disassemble for storage or transportation. I also added .step file for adjusting the parts according to your needs.
Materials:
- Zip ties: 32pcs, 2.5mm width, length is not so important, not less than 50mm. Any hardware store.
- Square 10x10mm (or a bit smaller) wood sticks, preferably not shorter than 1000-1200mm: 6-8 pcs, depending on the length. Hardware store as well.
- Rope: 40-80m, withstanding +15kg load force. Same hardware store.
- Windproof rip-stop fabric for the sails: depends on the size of the kite, for a small one you can manage with one 1.5x1m piece. I bought it from aliexpress here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006108863445.html You can also use other materials for covering, a piece of poliester film will work as good.
- Glue or staples to attach fabric to the frame.
- A few sheets of A4 paper for the tail - even though tails are not neccessary for box kites, they make them more stable in the air. Tail is attached to the bottom of the same strut as the rope lines.
Printable parts:
8pcs of side brackets, 2pcs of center brackets and 2 pcs for screw nuts for them. You may want to use 3-4 side walls with 50%+ of infill, as the threaded part must be strong enough. Any basic PLA is enough.
Assembly steps:
- Firstly assemble the frame, using wood sticks, printed parts and zip ties. It is straightforward and the pics are self explanatory. Pull zip ties as hard as you can - the frame should not be wobly.
- Attach two pieces of fabric to the assembled frame - the fabric should be tensioned well. Use staples, double-sided tape or glue.
- Attach the rope lines and the tail. You need to experiment choosing the right angle of attack - use a key ring or some kind of carabiner to make the connection to the main line rope movable and easy to attach.
Disassembly for storage or transportation:
Just unscrew the center brackets, use some cutters to cut the zip ties holding center cross members and remove them, leave side brackets zip-tied to the vertical struts. Replace cut zip ties when assembling the kite again.
