Details

On a small tank, the AquaClear intake reaches the sand. In addition to shortening the intake, this design allows a prefilter to be added to avoid sucking up small critters. I also sometimes stuff a wad of filter floss in it as a water polisher, though you could do that with the stock intake.

The OD is 30mm, so many sponges will likely fit, but it works well with these generic sponges off of Amazon. Since there are holes on the bottom, be sure to get a sponge that doesn't have a hole all the way through.

Thick vs Thin

The “thin wall” variant has an 0.8mm thick wall, while the “thick wall” variant has a 1.6mm wall. In theory the former should be more durable, since it increases flexibility, but if layer adhesion isn't good it's prone to cracking.

The “thin” variant worked well for me with eSun PETG, but I needed the thicker walls with Elegoo High Speed PETG.

Print Settings

  • Filament tested: Elegoo High Speed PETG (black), eSun PETG (natural)
  • Nozzle size: 0.4mm - 0.6mm recommended. 0.8mm produced very poor quality with high speed PETG.
  • Layer height: 0.2mm, but not critical.
  • Slow down for overhangs: Off. Leaving it on caused extremely poor layer adhesion on first layer of each horizontal rib.
  • Print orientation: Right side up, with the flat base against the print bed.
